All Brainerd Paid on-Call Firefighters must possess a valid MN Driver's License and live within 10 minutes driving time of either the Laurel Street or Northeast Brainerd Fire Stations.
Brainerd Paid on-Call Firefighters must respond to a minimum of 30% of all paged emergency calls per quarter. Currently Brainerd Fire Department averages 500 emergency calls per year. Brainerd Paid on-Call Firefighters must also participate in 60% of all scheduled trainings per quarter, and become familiar with our coverage area of 260 square miles.
Community service is a big part of our mission and Brainerd Paid on-Call Firefighters are expected to take part in various forms of service, such as public education, special details, community events, and fundraisers. Brainerd Paid on-Call Firefighters are also required to join the Brainerd Fire Department Relief Association.
Our hiring process consists of a passing score for both the written and agility tests, successful completion of a series of pre-employment tests, including drug screening, and a physical, cardiac stress test and a psychological test. Newly hired Brainerd Paid on-Call Firefighters will become Firefighter I and II State Certified within one year of hire (City paid training), and trained to the Emergency Medical Responder level with twenty-four months of hire (City paid training). Training certifications are required to be kept current for all Brainerd Paid on-Call Firefighters.
